The Global Health Body Sounds Concern Over Critical Lack of Obesity Medications

Fewer than a tenth of people who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy are able to get them, warns the World Health Organization as it releases its inaugural recommendations on the therapies.

Considering in excess of 1,000,000,000 individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for increased and just availability to GLP-1 medication.

According to projections, over two billion will be living with obesity by 2030 if no action is taken.

"Our latest guidance acknowledges that obesity is a long-term condition that can be treated with holistic and lifelong support," stated the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key obstacles to broad access to the treatments that can help people shift significant body mass, explains the agency.

GLP-1 Therapy Supply Crisis

Even in the current most optimistic outlook, the supply of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the health organization.

The guideline encourages nations and manufacturers to expand access, through measures such as licensing agreements.

Exclusive production rights on semaglutide – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in several nations in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Work

The injections mimick a natural hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people reduce food intake.

People commonly see weight reduction in the initial weeks of beginning the regular doses.

Evidence points to people may put most of the weight back on a year later of stopping the treatment, when their usual appetite resume.

Being overweight or obese elevates your risk for experiencing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, brain attack, and specific malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was linked to over three and a half million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the WHO.
